240 / AT-TB-02 — Laboratory Reagent Handling Toolbox Talk

WHERE AND WHY THIS BRIEFING MATTERS

Use this practical refinery laboratory toolbox talk before workers receive, prepare, transfer or dispose of chemicals associated with process sampling and analysis. The original exposure warning is release of a toxic or pressurised process sample. A routine reagent change can add chemical incompatibility or vapour exposure to a live process area; ground the talk in current plant status, the approved work order, chemical identity and local ventilation.

FIVE SPECIFIC SOURCE TALKING POINTS

The printed form requires the facilitator to discuss: separation of incompatible acids, oxidisers and flammables; reviewing Safety Data Sheets and using appropriate ventilation or a fume hood; checking reagent expiry, labels and calibration standards; using compatible spill-response methods and segregated waste; and promptly reporting occupational exposure or analytical anomalies. Demonstrate the location of actual reagent containers, lab extraction and applicable waste controls.

WHEN TO STOP AND ESCALATE

Before collecting or analysing plant samples, confirm tagged sample point, actual sample pressure/temperature, approved closed sampling, PPE and local extraction. If a sample may be released, an incompatible reagent is discovered, an alarm occurs or chemical exposure controls fail, stop the affected task. Notify the operator permit issuer or area authority; resume only after documented reassessment and release.

FACILITATOR AND SIGNATURE RECORD

Identify the actual facility/unit/equipment, work order/PTW and contractor/shift. Ask which hazard can change, who controls the isolation and what authorises restart. Record action/questions, the facilitator name/signature/date/shift, and up to sixteen employee IDs and signatures. This is an editable A4 Word discussion record—not a sample-point permit, occupational exposure assessment or lab accreditation.
