239 / AT-TB-01 — Safe Process Sample Collection Toolbox Talk
USE BEFORE TAKING A LIVE PROCESS SAMPLE
This toolbox talk is for a contractor sampling crew approaching a refinery or petrochemical sample take-off point. The form identifies the exposure as release of a pressurised or toxic process sample. The hazards change with the fluid, temperature, process pressure, operating state and nearby personnel. Before sampling, explain the actual tag, approved site method and operator controls rather than a generic lab briefing.
FIVE SOURCE-DEFINED SAFE-SAMPLING CONTROLS
Discuss and demonstrate confirmation of the line medium, process temperature and pressure; selection of an approved sample cylinder and method instead of an improvised bottle; protecting breathing zone and skin against vapour or splash; stopping sample collection during an unplanned plant condition or alarm; and closing and checking the sample valve before leaving. Demonstrate container compatibility and where proof of valve closure will be recorded.
STOP AND OPERATOR INVOLVEMENT
The printed escalation instruction calls for sample-point tagging, pressure/temperature confirmation, approved closed sampling, PPE and local extraction. If the method, containment or sample-point condition is uncertain, withdraw from the affected task and inform the permit issuer/area authority; require documented reassessment and release before resuming. Do not override process isolation or alarm restrictions with a briefing signature.
RECORD THE ACTUAL CREW BRIEFING
Enter facility/unit/equipment, operator PTW or work order and contractor/shift. Check staff understanding by asking which hazard could change, who owns the isolation and what establishes permission to restart. Record action/questions, facilitator name/sign/date and up to 16 attendees with employee IDs and signatures. This editable Word file proves briefing and attendance, not authority to operate a pressurised sample system.
